H.H. Coffield Art Therapy Pilot Program

Pilot Program

The Dallas Art Therapy program at Coffield Prison is a 12-week pilot initiative designed to provide adult inmates with a transformative space for self-expression, emotional growth, and mental health support. Led by a credentialed art therapist, this program offers a structured, therapeutic environment where participants can process past trauma, address negative behaviors, and work through challenges such as depression and suicidal ideation.

Combining artistic practice with psychological theory, the program tailors interventions to meet the unique needs of incarcerated individuals. Through art-making and guided discussions, participants will develop emotional regulation, healthy coping skills, and a renewed sense of identity and validation. The program also aims to instill hope and foster a positive outlook, supporting successful re-integration upon release.

Research underscores the powerful impact of art therapy in correctional settings, including reduced depressive symptoms, improved self-esteem, and behavioral improvements. By providing a safe outlet for processing complex emotions, art therapy contributes to rehabilitation and helps reduce recidivism.

Funding for this program will cover the cost of materials and therapy services, ensuring that participants receive the resources and support they need to engage fully in this life-changing experience. With measurable outcomes to assess its impact, Dallas Art Therapy is committed to promoting healing, resilience, and a path forward for incarcerated individuals.
